Motivation in any of your endeavor is key to success. There are a few ways to increase it and get the results that you want.
A consistent schedule
Having a routine is good because you know what you have to do consistently and it makes you more productive. You should adjust your schedule according to your own preferences. For example, some people will be more productive in the morning, in that case, they should dedicate their mornings to difficult problems (like creating a complex spreadsheet), while you can have meetings in the afternoon. Also do not forget to time each part of your day and try to beat yourself for each of your tasks.
Exercising is key, you will feel more energetic and get rid of your stress. Some people prefer to exercise early in the morning before work, others in the evening. Exercising will release in your body Serotonin and dopamine which will make you feel better, more optimistic and increase long term memory.
Set up clear goals
This is probably the most important factor, you need to define measurable criteria with a timeline otherwise you will never achieve anything. For example. You have decided that you wanted to run a marathon in a year from now, in order to do so, you will need to have progressive objectives (5km the first month, then 10km the second month…). The objectives should be achievable. Split your goals in small tasks that you can tackle. Writing a thesis might seems like an impossible goal, while if you divide it in a dozen chapters and tackle them sequentially, it will appear quite manageable.
Your mind and body cannot function if you strain them too much. You need to sleep at least 6 hours at night and during the day do not hesitate to have power naps (like 20min), it has been proven to be very effective. Lack of sleep is especially detrimental to your moral and your ability to solve Byzantine problems.
Read vocational books
Reading is certainly a great way to follow the steps of successful individuals, benefit from their experience and follow their advice to better achieve your goals. This is also a way to consider a goal or problem under a different light and make your mind more agile.
Cherish the power of learning
Last but not least, I find extraordinary that the entire human knowledge is available through the internet, it is a great source of joy and optimism for me that anyone can learn any type of knowledge or skill through Wikipedia, Coursera or Edx. This is truly amazing and provide me an unlimited source of motivation. Do you imagine that you can entirely train yourself in computer sciences or Engineering for free without having to quit your job, only by studying evenings and weekends.
